English ex­pe­ri­ences his own Ground-Dog Day

There have been end­less sto­ries about politi­cians hug­ging and kiss­ing ba­bies – as they do. But dogs are a bit of a thing too. At La Ci­gale mar­ket in Auck­land’s Par­nell yes­ter­day, it was Dog-Day Morn­ing – no, make that Ground-dog Day – as Bill English pat­ted, pet­ted and posed with pooches. From Ep­som MP Paul Gold­smith’s dog, Langer, to a mean mutt called Sher­man – as in the tank – they were all there. There was also a large spec­i­men that English omi­nously noted ‘‘liked jour­nal­ists’’.
