Environment vs commerce
What a surprise, Seafood NZ protecting its own commercial interests by claiming data on Maui dolphins is incorrect (Press, Feb 8).
Could this be the same industry that has successfully lobbied against placement of cameras on fishing vessels, so no-one really knows what the by-catch situation is?
Maui dolphins (and the related Hector’s dolphins) are so rare The Press had to use a photo of a bottle-nosed dolphin for the article!
It’s the same old choice that governments seem to struggle with the world over: doing what’s right for the environment versus commercial interests. Wouldn’t it be nice, just once, to see a government prioritise the environment? P Duke, Redwood
