Ri­vals to square off

South­land and Otago will go head to head in an age-group rugby tre­ble at Rugby Park in In­ver­cargill to­day.

The two prov­ince’s un­der-14 teams, un­der-16 teams and un­der18 teams will all take on each other, with the un­der-14 game start­ing the day at noon.

The un­der-16 teams will square­off at 1.15pm, fol­lowed by the un­der-18 game at 2.30pm.

For the un­der-16 and un­der-18 South­land and Otago teams, the games are more lead-in fix­tures for their re­spec­tive South Is­land tour­na­ments.

North Otago will host the un­der-16 tour­na­ment on Oc­to­ber 5-7, while the un­der-18 tour­na­ment will be played in Christchurch on Oc­to­ber 6-7.

The South­land sec­ondary school girls team will also play against Otago to­day with the game sched­uled to start at 1pm in Balclutha.

The South Is­land Sec­ondary Schools tour­na­ment will be played over three days in Christchurch start­ing on Oc­to­ber 1.

The South­land un­der-19 team also have an im­por­tant fix­ture to­day as they line up in the Michael Jones Tro­phy fi­nal against Coun­ties Manukau at the na­tional tour­na­ment in Taupo.

Mean­while, Hau­roko Val­ley Pri­mary School will rep­re­sent South­land at the pri­mary schools Rippa Rugby Cham­pi­onships in Welling­ton on Mon­day and Tues­day.

Twenty schools from all over the coun­try will at­tend the event from the over 600 schools who at­tempted to qual­ify.

Ar­row­town will rep­re­sent Otago at the tour­na­ment.
