No sign of miss­ing boat­ies

Po­lice have been un­able to find two boat­ies miss­ing off the West Coast af­ter re­sum­ing the search yes­ter­day.

The men have not been seen since their fish­ing boat, the Grey­mouth-based ves­sel Wendy J, got into trou­ble near Jack­son Bay be­cause of weather con­di­tions.

They were re­ported miss­ing af­ter de­bris and a life raft were found off­shore.

About 2.40pm on Satur­day, a he­li­copter found one of three men aboard the boat near Teer Creek, about 8km south­west of where the ves­sel went down.

The sur­vivor was Mark Thomas, a man in his early-20s, it was re­ported.

One of the miss­ing men was Jay Cair­ney, an ex­pe­ri­enced fish­er­man. The other is un­der­stood to be Kieran Lynch, a young fa­ther.

He­li­copter and ground teams had been search­ing yes­ter­day since 1pm, but could not find the men.

The search was sus­pended for the night, and would re­sume this morn­ing.
