Man­son out of medals

Rob­bie Man­son missed out on a medal at the world row­ing cham­pi­onships in Bul­garia last night. The New Zealand men’s sin­gle sculler was fifth in the A fi­nal in Plov­div, with Nor­way’s Kjetil Borch win­ning gold. Czech Repub­lic’s On­drej Synek, who has been world cham­pion five times, took sil­ver with Min­dau­gas Grisko­nis of Lithua­nia claim­ing bronze. Man­son won the New Zealand sin­gle sculls spot for this year’s world cham­pi­onships ahead of three-time Olympic medal­list Mahe Drys­dale on the ba­sis of his per­for­mances at the two World Cup re­gat­tas the Ki­wis con­tested in Europe ear­lier this year. On Satur­day, only one of five New Zealand boats in A fi­nals man­aged a medal, with the women’s pair of Kerri Gowler and Grace Pren­der­gast tak­ing sil­ver.
