Babies’ deaths probed

The Southland Times - - National -

The deaths of two infant siblings 14 months apart are suspicious, police have confirmed. However, a lengthy investigation appears to have stalled and the coroner will likely determine what happened to the 2-month-old girl and her 6-week-old brother. The babies both lived at a property their parents rented in Canterbury. The girl died in May 2015. Her brother died in March 2014. Stuff has chosen not to name those involved. Police previously said the circumstances of the deaths were similar. In both cases, the children’s mother, aged in her 20s, told investigators she put them to bed in the morning after they were fed. A short time later she went to check on them and found they had stopped breathing. The woman’s partner was not home at the time. This week, Detective Inspector Greg Murton said there were concerns about the circumstances surrounding both deaths.
