Demand pushes prices to new high
Strong demand for ewes pushed prices into unchartered territory at the Lorneville two-tooth ewe and lamb fair on Tuesday.
The best of the Border Leicester cross two-tooth ewes made $265 to $314 while other breeds ranged from $230 to $290 and the ewe lambs fetched $170 to $220.
PGG Wrightson Southland livestock manager Andrew Martin said a strong export market and plentiful feed supplies helped drive up ewe prices.
‘’It was a particularly strong sale and all the sheep sold really well,’’ he said.
Graeme Anderson, of Wrights Bush, sold the highest priced line of Border Leicester cross twotooth ewes for $314 while Ashley Halder, of Timpanys, sold the top line of Border Leicester cross ewe lambs for $220.
Martin said the Border Leicester cross sheep always sold well and Tuesday’s sale was no exception.
‘’It’s known to be a particularly good cross with its hybrid vigour, good mothering ability and good lambing percentage.
