News that the Aigantighe homestead, part of Timaru’s Aigantighe Art Gallery, has been closed due to ‘‘critical weaknesses’’, comes as a blow to the rich cultural life of South Canterbury. It’s the right decision, with the homestead at just 10 per cent of building standards, but it’s to be hoped its unavailability as an exhibition venue can be compensated for. Our strong artistic community deserves that.
