Wild winds caused problems on stretches of rural South Canterbury highways on Friday after Timaru awoke to a blanket of thick fog.

A campervan was blown off the road on State Highway 8, near Hayman Rd, between Tekapo and Twizel, just after 10.00am.

Shortly before the crash, police issued a strong wind warning for the same stretch of highway, with drivers of high-sided vehicles and motorcycles urged to take particular care.

Just over half-an-hour later the wind warning was extended to State Highway 8 between Omarama and Burke’s Pass.

A strong wind watch issued by the MetService for the Canterbury High Country said northwesterly gales could strengthen to severe gales in exposed places between 10pm Friday and 6am Saturday.

MetService forecaster Tim Coutts said the fog that covered much of Timaru had been ‘‘a little bit unexpected’’.

‘‘It looks like you have had a little bit of an onshore wind that is quite moist and has just dragged in some low cloud and fog.’’

Morning flights from Timaru were unaffected.
