Flood affected highways reopen

The Tribune (NZ) - - NEWS -

The Manawatu Gorge and the Pahaiatua Track reopened in time for the weekend, less than a week after one of the worst floods in lower North Island’s history.

The gorge was opened following a geotechnical assessment but repairs to damaged mesh barriers and rock catchers will continue.

On the Pahiatua Track, an estimated 30-40,000 cubic metres of soil and rock from a slip next to the lookout at the Palmerston North end had to be cleared. A 30 kilometre speed restriction is in place there and near the intersection of the Pahiatua Track and Bush Track. Sections may be reduced to one lane over the next two weeks to allow contractors to finish the cleanup.

SH54 between Cheltenham and Vinegar Hill is still closed with single lane access for 4WD emergency vehicles only.
