Team to make their trans-Tasman debut

The Tribune (NZ) - - News - RICHARD MAYS

Off to the GC – two years planning came to fruition on Saturday when 24 rugby players aged 14 to 18, their coach, a couple of teachers and parent helpers assembled at Freyberg High School for an eagerly anticipated sports trip.

The Freyberg rugby team has entered this week’s 25th anniversary Gold Coast Rugby Tournament in Queensland.

Organiser Belinda Bidois says the trip originated as an incentive to keep talented young players at school and attending classes.

‘‘Most of them have never been out of the North Island or flown in an aeroplane, so it’s incredibly exciting for them,’’ Belinda says.

It took two years to raise the $75,000 for the trip.

Away for a week, the team plays six games against Australian and New Zealand teams over three tournament days, spending the rest of the time sightseeing, before returning on Sunday.
