Technical excellence combined with beautiful hair and fashion proved to be a winning combination at the Manawatu Regional Hairdresser of the Year Awards 2015 held in the Silks Lounge on Sunday, June 28.
Manawatu Association of Registered Hairdressers president Jayne Bergerson said the competition day was highly successful.
‘‘Entry numbers were a little lower than we have had in previous years, but the work was of a very high standard.
‘‘Hairdressing in Manawatu is very strong so we tend to be very hard on ourselves and when our hairdressers compete they tend to do well.’’
A contributing factor to the lower number of competitors was the slight downturn in hairdressing apprentice numbers.
Jayne says some definite trends emerged from the competition.
‘‘There was a strong focus on technique, excellence and a return to beautiful hair. The work really embraced everything about the industry and showcased all the skills of it. It wasn’t just about the hairstyle, it was a real enhancement of fashion and features.’’
Jayne says the competition ‘‘was definitely back to the way things were with beautiful hair, creative colours and technical excellence’’.
Competitions are seen as vital in maintaining standards in the industry and keeping up with trends.
