Chris Ma returns, conducting Taipei’s Nanmen Junior High School String Orchestra alongside the Manawatu Youth Orchestra in the Spiers Centre.
It’s a special homecoming for visiting Taiwanese conductor, Chris Ma. When Chris takes the Spiers Centre podium in front of the Nanmen Junior High School String Orchestra from Taipei, he will be on familiar ground.
Chris grew up in Palmerston North and attended Boys High School, where he was Dux Artium. He was leader of the Manawatu Youth Orchestra before moving to Wellington to complete a performance degree at Victoria University.
Now he is teaching music in Taipei. His school string orchestra is performing in a combined concert with the Manawatu Youth Orchestra.
‘‘ Palmerston North has many great opportunities to develop as a young musician I had wonderful musical experiences here.
‘‘I played violin in the Youth Orchestra and Sinfonia and I won the Young Performers Prize at Musica Viva, so it is great to be able to come back and thank my teachers and the musicians and public of Palmerston North in this wonderful musical way.’’
The Nanmen School Orchestra presents popular short string items, before joining the Manawatu Youth Orchestra for a combined performance of Handel’s Fireworks Music.
TheMYOunder conductor Isaac Henderson will complete the programme with its own performance of Verdi’s Force of Destiny Overture and Rossini’s The Barber of Seville Overture. The concert is at 4pm Saturday 25 in the Spiers Centre. Tickets at the door are $10/$5.
Members of Taipei’s Nanmen Junior High School String Orchestra under the leadership of a former Palmerston North Boys’ High dux, Chris Ma, will play with the Manawatu Youth Orchestra on Saturday in the Spiers Centre.
