Chris Dann & Co to tinker with classics

The Tribune (NZ) - - THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT -

When Chris Dan & Co last played Te Manawa’s Sunday Concert Series, they proved to be extremely popular, according to series organiser Guy Donaldson.

‘‘Last year’s concert was one of the best attended and the response of the audience was highly enthusiastic.’’

If that is anything to go by, concert-goers will need to arrive early to get the best seats in the gallery for this Sunday, June 26. Chris on piano will be joined by trombonist and trumpet player Nick Van Dijk, saxophonist and flautist Stephanie McKenzie, cellist Joanna Dann, with Nicky Wuts on vibraphone for a blend of classical and jazz improvisation.

Recast into a jazz framework, the music includes Ravel’s Bolero, the theme from Brahms’ Symphony No 3, and the theme from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. Chris says the idea is to not take necessarily the whole piece, but explore a main theme as is typically done with well-known jazz standards.

‘‘Redoing music in different formats is really part and parcel of the history of musical endeavours,’’ Chris says.

Sunday’s ensemble concert begins at 2.30pm and admission is by donation.
