5. ON THE BALL
Formal ball for Plunket plus ballroom dancing refresher. See P15
Time for all to have a ball – a genuine old-school formal ballgowns tux ’n tails event. A ball where there are monte carlos and maxinas, two-steps and foxtrots, gay gordons and snowballs. Then to the 50s and 60s with the twist, possibly the pony, the mashed potato, or even the watusi. And dance cards.
Welcome to the Blended Blue Ball at the Masonic Lodge in Church St in aid of Plunket. Dance cards? At formal balls in days of yore, the dances would be programmed, and the ladies would book their dance partners for each number in advance on their copy of this programme.
The dances, the style and the quaint customs of yesteryear promise to make the Blended Blue Ball on Saturday August 8 the grand social event of the season, according to Plunket’s Kylie Gibbard.
‘‘It’s something a little bit different. Plunket used to have large fundraising balls back in the 60s. This is about bringing the idea back. The location and atmosphere in the Masonic Lodge is just wonderful.’’
The $65 tickets include supper and refreshment passes, coffee and cake. Music is being provided by Electric Blue, a band put together by Peter and Brent Tanoa. Event co-organiser Kathy Jarrett says a blue theme is planned that could range from The Blue Danube Waltz to Blue Bayou, Blueberry Hill to Mr Blue Sky, Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk to Rhapsody in Blue, Blue Lady to Blue Smoke, and there’s bound to be a pair of Blue Suede Shoes in the mix somewhere.
For those with several left feet or who feel intimidated by the razzle-dazzle of Dancing With the Stars, Kathy says there’s a $10 a head 90-minute ballroom refresher for ticketholders at 2pm in the Central Normal School Hall in Featherston St this Saturday at 2pm.
‘‘It’s an opportunity to turn rusty toes into twinkle toes.’’
Time then to titivate the ‘do, break out the glad-rags, spitpolish the shoes, loosen the cummerbund and dust off the tiara,
‘‘Absolutely, it’s a bit posh,’’ Kathy says. ‘‘A bit posh and a lot of fun.’’
Tickets to Plunket’s splendid Blended Blue Ball at Lodge Kilwinning in Church St are available on Eventfinda.
