Costly mistakes lead to third Turbos defeat

The Tribune (NZ) - - SPORT -

Mistakes led to four Makos tries as the Turbos went down for the third time in the ITM Cup.

Error-ridden play gifted turnovers and penalty points to the Tasman Makos who ran in four tries to three, clinching the match at Blenheim’s Lansdowne Park last Thursday night, 41-21.

Tasman led 21-7 at half time, with the Turbos’ try to halfback Kayne Hammington.

Winger Semisi Masirewa scored in the second, and captain Callum Gibbins was awarded a penalty try when he was foot-tripped following through after a loose ball. Otere Black converted all three tries, but failed at two penalty attempts.

It was another game of missed opportunities, and a team with more clinical execution, better discipline and finishing could well have pulled off a different result.

This Thursday night, sees the Turbos up against another unbeaten side in Canterbury. It will be Canterbury’s second only visit to the Boneyard in ITM Cup history. When the two teams met here in 2010 Manawatu was pipped at the post 27-26. Kickoff is at 7.35pm.

Manawatu winger Semisi Masirewa makes a great run to score against Tasman early in the second half of last week’s game in Blenheim.
