Take a trip down memory lane

The Tribune (NZ) - - SHOPPING -

Terrace End Antiques and Collectables is a real treasure trove for anyone who loves fossicking through the past.

Owner Yasmin Key’s shop is full of preloved china, glassware, decorative ornaments, linen, hats and furnishings, along with many other household items.

Yasmin has been at her present shop at the top of Broadway for almost five years, after moving from her old shop in Main Street.

‘‘I have found that while tastes and fashions may have changed over the past few years there is still a strong demand for many different types of collectables, especially toys and dolls as well as antique fashion jewellery.

‘‘I will look for a range of items that will appeal to both traditional collectors as well as more general items for people who are looking for a one off antique or ornament to complement their home,’’ says Yasmin.

Currently the most popular items are the useful smaller items such as kitchen items, small pieces of furniture, light fittings and china.

‘‘I have quite a few pieces of antique and collectable china and porcelain as well as a range of complete or partially complete dinner sets. I’ll often have a customer who wants to add pieces to an older dinner set or replace missing pieces that have been broken or damaged, and if I don’t have the item in the shop then I will try to source it for them.’’

Yasmin’s treasures date back to the late Victorian era and some of her 19th century items include paintings and prints, jewellery and even an ice cream maker. Early models of cameras, tools and instruments as well as toys are also extremely popular.

‘‘I like to think my customers will enjoy browsing through the shop and they will often come across something that really appeals, either for themselves or as that perfect gift for a family member or friend.’’

Terrace End Antiques and Collectables is also popular with people who are doing up an old home and may be looking for some old brass hardware or light fittings to match the period of their home, or perhaps they want the odd decorative feature, which also serves a practical purpose, such as a brass fireside set and coal scuttle.

Terrace End Antiques and Collectables is open from 10am till 4.45pm Mondays to Thursdays, 11am to 4.45pm Fridays and from 10am to 2pm Saturdays but only over the summer months. During winter, Yasmin is available on Saturdays by appointment and you can contact her on (06) 3575585.
