The Tim and Gary roadshow returns

You know the TV ads featuring Gary McCormick and Simon Barnett... Well, Simon isn’t the only man in Gary’s life. In fact, twinkle-toes Simon is a Johnny-come-lately.

Gary has a much deeper and enduring relationship with a certain serial mayor. They travel around together doing a double act that has stood the test of time. And while their names don’t quite trip off the tongue with the same flow as say Hudson & Halls, Gilbert & Sullivan or Punch & Judy, the pairing of McCormick and Shadbolt certainly has staying power, clocking up well in excess of 100 gigs.

Back in the 70s, Tim Shadbolt was the notorious author of a book called Bullshit and Jellybeans – the manifesto of a bunch of Auckland-based politi- cal activists called the Progressive Youth Movement, or PYM

Tim and Gary got to know one another, while they shared a cell together after their arrest during a protest on Parliament grounds.

‘‘I made a brilliant speech to the Magistrate about freedom of speech – but he didn’t seem to be listening,’’ Gary recalls.

While magistrates still probably won’t appreciate the pair when they appear this Saturday night at the Hokowhitu Bowling Club on Albert St, there’s bound to be plenty up for a night of yarns and anecdotes, tall tales and true.

The Hokowhitu Bowling Club is the new Bent Horsehoe, with Tim and Gary the first in a monthly series.

Bookings on 06 329 8808, 027 368 2367 and steve@benthorse for the 8pm, $28 a head performance are essential .

Indomitible duo, Tim Shadbolt and Gary McCormick are back in town to strut their schtick.
