‘Sport mak­ers’ make the dif­fer­ence

A cel­e­bra­tion of Manawatu’s sport­ing or­gan­i­sa­tions and vol­un­teers, the 2015 Sport Manawatu Grass­roots Sports Awards at­tracted an as­ton­ish­ing num­ber of nom­i­na­tions.

Known as ‘sport mak­ers’ – be­cause with­out them sport across the spec­trum couldn’t hap­pen – close to 1500 names were re­ceived by Sport Manawatu.

A hat­trick of awards – Re­gional Sport Maker of the Year, Front Line Vol­un­teer Award and Sport Vol­un­teer – went to football coach Shaun Palmer, de­scribed as an ‘‘awe­some role model for the young boys’’ who makes football fun for the teams he is in­volved with.

Sports Or­gan­i­sa­tion of the Year and the Par­tic­i­pa­tion Ini­tia­tive of the Year awards went to the Manawatu Bad­minton As­so­ci­a­tion for in­creased mem­ber­ship as a di­rect re­sult of com­pe­ti­tions, pro­grammes and pro­mo­tional ac­tiv­i­ties that cater for all abil­i­ties and lev­els of ex­pe­ri­ence.

Or­gan­i­sa­tion Event of the Year: Feild­ing Moas – Feild­ing Marathon.

Sport Vol­un­teer – Be­hind the Scenes Award: Mar­i­lyn Dolan – Squash.

Ath­lete De­vel­op­ment of the Year: Squash Gym.

Fundrais­ing Ini­tia­tive of the Year: Spe­cial Olympics.

Sport Vol­un­teer – All Rounder Award: Mark An­der­sen – Marist Ju­nior Rugby.

Best Pre­sented Or­gan­i­sa­tion of the Year: Marist Ju­nior Rugby.

Sports Part­ner of the Year: Finest Batch Bak­ery Pahiatua.

‘Su­per Vol­un­teer Awards’ were also given out to 12 vol­un­teers who have given at least 25 years’ ser­vice to sport.
