‘Sport makers’ make the difference
A celebration of Manawatu’s sporting organisations and volunteers, the 2015 Sport Manawatu Grassroots Sports Awards attracted an astonishing number of nominations.
Known as ‘sport makers’ – because without them sport across the spectrum couldn’t happen – close to 1500 names were received by Sport Manawatu.
A hattrick of awards – Regional Sport Maker of the Year, Front Line Volunteer Award and Sport Volunteer – went to football coach Shaun Palmer, described as an ‘‘awesome role model for the young boys’’ who makes football fun for the teams he is involved with.
Sports Organisation of the Year and the Participation Initiative of the Year awards went to the Manawatu Badminton Association for increased membership as a direct result of competitions, programmes and promotional activities that cater for all abilities and levels of experience.
Organisation Event of the Year: Feilding Moas – Feilding Marathon.
Sport Volunteer – Behind the Scenes Award: Marilyn Dolan – Squash.
Athlete Development of the Year: Squash Gym.
Fundraising Initiative of the Year: Special Olympics.
Sport Volunteer – All Rounder Award: Mark Andersen – Marist Junior Rugby.
Best Presented Organisation of the Year: Marist Junior Rugby.
Sports Partner of the Year: Finest Batch Bakery Pahiatua.
‘Super Volunteer Awards’ were also given out to 12 volunteers who have given at least 25 years’ service to sport.
