60 years together and pair still going strong
Sixty years together is a diamond anniversary. It’s rare enough to attract a card from the Queen, as well as acknowledgements from our own governmental and parliamentary dignitaries.
Barbara and Selwyn Healy are a couple of diamonds who spent the weekend celebrating with family and friends.
Blame the Astoria Ballroom. That’s where the pair met 65 years ago. Barbara, a Feilding lass, was only 15 at the time.
‘‘It was Labour Weekend,’’ Barbara says. ‘‘Alan Jordan and his band were playing.’’
Both have celebrated other milestones this year – Barbara was 80 in April, while Selwyn turned 85 in June.
‘‘We’ve had a wonderful life, really,’’ Barbara says.
‘‘We’ve had many arguments,’’ Selwyn counters mischeviously, ‘‘and I haven’t won any of them... We were babysitting our grandson, Sam who was six-years-old at the time, and he says ‘You know, grandad, you can never win’. ‘How right you are,’ I said. He knew the ropes.’’
Sam is one of six grandchildren Barbara and Selwyn’s two daughters and one son have produced.
‘‘But we never went to bed without talking out our differences,’’ Barabara says.
Active on school committees, the pair played golf at Palmerston North Golf Club and lawn bowls at the Palmerston North Bowling Club. In his younger days, Selwyn played cricket and rugby for Marist.
In the late 70s and into the 80s, the couple owned the Athenian Lounge in Coleman Pl beneath the Deluxe Billiard Saloon next to Hallensteins – now Trumps. A friend of Manawatu rugby coaching great Gra- ham Hamer, Selwyn offered the Lounge as a social getaway for members of the Manawatu team and their families.
‘‘We used to go to rugby games in Wellington and Wanganui together, and he would study the teams... I used to tell him plenty,’’ Selwyn says.
‘‘It was a fun time,’’ Barbara adds.
Family though, has been the most important thing.
‘‘We’ve been very fortunate in having a loving and caring family,’’ she says. ‘‘Our 60 years have passed very quickly and very happily.’’
Terrace End couple Barbara and Selwyn Healy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Friday.
