Christmas belles are all a-jingle

What a brilliant year it’s been for Ian Harman.

His set for the Wellington Circa production of Pip Hall’s Ache and his costumes for The Mystery of Edwin Drood also at Circa, won him Set Designer of the Year and Costume Designer of the Year at the Wellington Theatre Awards on Sunday night.

‘‘For Edwin Drood, I had to come up with Victorian costumes for 34 people in two weeks.’’

Ian says the acknowledgments cap a really exciting and fulfilling year, especially as he’s a relative newcomer to set design.

‘‘I was really surprised I got both. It was a great evening really.’’

Since September, Ian has been working ‘‘seven days a week’’ on a variety of theatrical projects, including Abbey Musical Theatre’s The British Invasion, and costume design for Centrepoint’s The Boys at the Beach.

His first gig this year was as designer, costumier and performer in Comedy Cabaret II directed by Rima Te Wiata at Rotorua’s Blue Baths, followed there by The Lola Show, reprised later in Palmerston North during the inaugural Solo season in The Dark Room.

Ian also designed set and costumes for Centrepoint’s Midsummer, and in August there was the sell-out season at the Globe of his burlesque show, Hotel D’Amour.

On Friday, his year finishes with a flourish in the Christmas burlesque Jingle All the Way.

Since 2007 his Boom Boom Room troupe have regularly presented glam revue-style shows overseen by the incomparable puckish trans-sexual prestidigitator, Mr Lola Illusion.

Members of the original troupe are back for the Christmas themed show: There’s Lola of course, Miss Yula La, Miss Hollie Berry, Miss Costa De Million and Miss Veronica Doll in a bubbly tinsel-tinged, mistletoe mwah-ed, exotic extravaganza of beads and boas, feathers and fishnets, sequins and lace all held together by a provocatively and loosely tied Christmas bow.

Expect a tasteful, lavishly presented Yuletide tease with plenty of red, white, green and Christmas gold. The show begins in Globe I Friday at 9pm.

Hollie Berry and Costa De Million will work out who’s naughty or nice during burlesque show Jingle All the Way
