Two decades of con­tem­po­rary Maori art is be­ing show­cased over Christ­mas and into the New Year

Shared be­tween Te Manawa, the Square Edge Com­mu­nity Gallery, the White Room Gallery, the im­pres­sive col­lec­tion called Toioho XX is on show at TeManawa un­til April 17, with two smaller ex­hi­bi­tions in the Square Edge Art Gallery and The White Room un­til mid Jan­uary.

Pro­fes­sor of Maori Vis­ual Arts and ex­hi­bi­tion cu­ra­tor Bob Jahnke says the dis­play, which marks the 20th an­niver­sary of Massey Univer­sity’s Bach­e­lor of Maori Vis­ual Arts, pro­vides an amaz­ing op­por­tu­nity to view a large amount of con­tem­po­rary Maori art.

‘‘It’s an over­view of when they have been on the pro­gramme through to com­ple­tion and be­yond. It pulls to­gether all those threads.’’

The ex­hi­bi­tions in Square Edge and the White Room Gallery, cu­rated by Is­rael Birch, are so that work by ev­ery past stu­dent of the pro­gramme can be in­cluded.

In­clud­ing works by Shane Cot­ton, Kura TeWaru Rewiri, Rachael Rak­ena, Ngatai Taepa and Is­rael, the pieces in­clude video, in­stal­la­tion, sculp­ture, paint­ing and a work by Huhana Smith that has been cre­ated specif­i­cally for the 20-year an­niver­sary.

Four other re­lated weav­ing, in­stal­la­tion, per­for­mance art, clay work and paint­ing ex­hi­bi­tions are run­ning con­cur­rently along­side Toioho XX at Te Manawa.
