Two decades of contemporary Maori art is being showcased over Christmas and into the New Year
Shared between Te Manawa, the Square Edge Community Gallery, the White Room Gallery, the impressive collection called Toioho XX is on show at TeManawa until April 17, with two smaller exhibitions in the Square Edge Art Gallery and The White Room until mid January.

Professor of Maori Visual Arts and exhibition curator Bob Jahnke says the display, which marks the 20th anniversary of Massey University’s Bachelor of Maori Visual Arts, provides an amazing opportunity to view a large amount of contemporary Maori art.
‘‘It’s an overview of when they have been on the programme through to completion and beyond. It pulls together all those threads.’’
The exhibitions in Square Edge and the White Room Gallery, curated by Israel Birch, are so that work by every past student of the programme can be included.

Including works by Shane Cotton, Kura TeWaru Rewiri, Rachael Rakena, Ngatai Taepa and Israel, the pieces include video, installation, sculpture, painting and a work by Huhana Smith that has been created specifically for the 20-year anniversary.
Four other related weaving, installation, performance art, clay work and painting exhibitions are running concurrently alongside Toioho XX at Te Manawa.
