Come together for Christmas in The Square
The Square corners Christmas on Saturday evening with the annual community concert and carols celebration. Coordinating with the Christmas Night Market being held at the same time, the events quadrant will burst into life between 5pm and 9pm.
Involving several of the city’s top musicians,the occasion opens with children’s entertainment, and continues with musical guests the Manawataki Drummers, Kiwi Bop, ukulele exponents Highly Strung, G_Phunk, Sio, ReZist, the Palmy Christmas All Star Band, the Unified Gospel Choir, and as night falls, there’s Carols by Candlelight with The Manawatu Community Choir...oh, and a visit from Santa.
Deputy Mayor Duncan McCann, a member of the Palmy All Star Band, says donations from the free community event will go to support Methodist Social Services, with input from any number of city businesses, trusts and organisations making it all happen.

Jennifer Moss and the
of Manawataki Drummers and the Community Choir leading the carols, there’s entertainment to suit most tastes. Vocalist Sio impressed with his performance at White ribbon Day in The Square. G_Phunk is a local fivepiece outfit combining funk and jazz feels with hip hop and reggae flavours.
Emerging city band ReZist, formed in 2014 by UCOL Diploma in Music students, have gone on to release their own songs, with first single, The Recipe out now on Spotify & iTunes. As well the band has played alongside established performers such as Katchafire, 1814, Tomorrow People, Chad Chambers, Ardijah, Pieter T, L40, and Che Fu.
This year’s All Stars Band is fronted by veteran music teacher and performer Roger Buchanan. Joining him on guitars are Truly Made frontman Jon Bowen with Duncan, vocalist Amy Hunt from Kiwi Bop and Retro Express, Dirtbox Charlie bassist Michael Crawford and Tate BradleyBurgess on drums, and Jess Linsey. The Beggs Music Brass section features Dean Parkinson, Graeme Parker and Tim Cook, while special guests include Iain and Clare Lees-Galloway, Jono Naylor and the Tiritea School choir.
So if it’s Christmas you want, it’s the gift-iest, friendliest, singiest Christmas you’ll get, with wet weather venue, the Regent on Broadway.
Levi Lewis, Ihaka Woon, Kahurangi Hapi-Tukapua, Trent Fairhurst, Jordan Carr, Taepa Martin and Otene Rakatau are the members of ReZist. The locally formed band is among several playing at Christmas in The Square on Saturday.
