Come to­gether for Christ­mas in The Square

The Square cor­ners Christ­mas on Satur­day evening with the an­nual com­mu­nity con­cert and carols cel­e­bra­tion. Co­or­di­nat­ing with the Christ­mas Night Mar­ket be­ing held at the same time, the events quad­rant will burst into life be­tween 5pm and 9pm.

In­volv­ing sev­eral of the city’s top mu­si­cians,the oc­ca­sion opens with chil­dren’s en­ter­tain­ment, and con­tin­ues with mu­si­cal guests the Manawataki Drum­mers, Kiwi Bop, ukulele ex­po­nents Highly Strung, G_Phunk, Sio, ReZist, the Palmy Christ­mas All Star Band, the Uni­fied Gospel Choir, and as night falls, there’s Carols by Can­dle­light with The Manawatu Com­mu­nity Choir...oh, and a visit from Santa.

Deputy Mayor Duncan McCann, a mem­ber of the Palmy All Star Band, says do­na­tions from the free com­mu­nity event will go to sup­port Methodist So­cial Ser­vices, with in­put from any num­ber of city busi­nesses, trusts and or­gan­i­sa­tions making it all hap­pen.

of Manawataki Drum­mers and the Com­mu­nity Choir lead­ing the carols, there’s en­ter­tain­ment to suit most tastes. Vo­cal­ist Sio im­pressed with his per­for­mance at White rib­bon Day in The Square. G_Phunk is a lo­cal five­piece out­fit com­bin­ing funk and jazz feels with hip hop and reg­gae flavours.

Emerg­ing city band ReZist, formed in 2014 by UCOL Diploma in Mu­sic stu­dents, have gone on to release their own songs, with first sin­gle, The Recipe out now on Spo­tify & iTunes. As well the band has played along­side es­tab­lished per­form­ers such as Katchafire, 1814, Tomorrow Peo­ple, Chad Cham­bers, Ardi­jah, Pi­eter T, L40, and Che Fu.

This year’s All Stars Band is fronted by vet­eran mu­sic teacher and per­former Roger Buchanan. Join­ing him on gui­tars are Truly Made front­man Jon Bowen with Duncan, vo­cal­ist Amy Hunt from Kiwi Bop and Retro Ex­press, Dirt­box Char­lie bassist Michael Craw­ford and Tate BradleyBurgess on drums, and Jess Lin­sey. The Beggs Mu­sic Brass sec­tion fea­tures Dean Parkin­son, Graeme Parker and Tim Cook, while spe­cial guests in­clude Iain and Clare Lees-Galloway, Jono Nay­lor and the Tiritea School choir.

So if it’s Christ­mas you want, it’s the gift-iest, friendli­est, singi­est Christ­mas you’ll get, with wet weather venue, the Re­gent on Broad­way.


Levi Lewis, Ihaka Woon, Kahu­rangi Hapi-Tuka­pua, Trent Fairhurst, Jor­dan Carr, Taepa Martin and Otene Rakatau are the mem­bers of ReZist. The lo­cally formed band is among sev­eral play­ing at Christ­mas in The Square on Satur­day.
