Foxton fair set to fizz this summer

The Tribune (NZ) - - ENVIRONMENT - MIKE SMITH, Water And Environmental Care Association (WECA)

Summer is here, and by New Year we will be in jandals, keen to spend time at the beach with ice creams, swimming, sand castles, and sea birds. Add in the Foxton Beach New Year Fair, and there’s the perfect holiday for children, families, bargain hunters, and friends.

Water and Environmental Care Association Inc. (WECA), organisers of this free festive day, are keen to ensure plenty of enjoyment. As well as children’s rides, there’s paintball, food of all kinds, clothing, plants, fruit and vegetables, jewellery, garden ornaments, bric-a-brac, collectables, carvings, healing therapies, balms and bargains – in short, something for everybody.

The Dawick Street Reserve on Seabury Ave is in central Foxton Beach. There is ample parking with easy event access, including reserved parking for persons with disabilities and plenty of loading area.

As well as fun, the New Year Fair provides funds for WECA, a group committed to the sustainable management of the natural environment affecting the Estuary, the Manawatu River, Lake Horowhenua, and other wetlands within the surrounding river catchment areas.

WECA keeps a watch on resource consents to improve our lives. It is WECA that speaks for the environment when industries, farms and councils apply to discharge effluent to the Manawatu River, its tributaries and other waterways.

By focusing on effluent dis- charge – commercial wastewater, farm runoff, stormwater drainage, or partially treated effluent – WECA aims to treat the problem at the source. Using the submission process under the Resource Management Act (RMA) and regional planning rules, WECA seeks to divert all discharges to land or to treat the effluent to a higher standard.

So mark Saturday January 2nd 9:00 am – 3:00 pm in your diary to enjoy a day at the beach. And don’t forget that the Manawatu Estuary – a Ramsar wetland of international significance and a transitory home to countless numbers of birds – is only a brief step or two away from the fair.

Organisations and craftspeople can contact WECA for sites, C/- Mike Smith 021 0868 5886, or weca.newyear
