Summer may have stuttered into being, but at least temperatures are warm and outdoorsy. About now, the city starts to come round after its extended holiday break. Residents return, streets and cafes get back to something resembling normalcy, and there’s a bit of head space to contemplate what 2016 may bring.

Of course, we’re not out of the holiday ‘‘woods’’ yet. There’s Wellington Anniversary weekend from January 23 – 25, and close behind, the long Waitangi Day weekend.

So, still occasion to be extra careful on the roads and around waterways. Fortunately, Manawatu has so far not featured on either holiday toll, although 28 people died on roads in our region in 2015.

All it takes is a little carelessness for our clean holiday slate to change.

On a brighter note, there are plenty of free and inexpensive events and pastimes to keep families out and about and enjoying life.
