The Revenant - a sure-fire hit movie for 2016
The Revenant might be bloody, dirty, cold, scary and long, but it’s one of the great movies of the season.
The squirming starts in the opening scene when a big bunch of scruffy trappers with their precious furs and pelts are set upon by Arikara, Native Americans, in the 1820s. Let’s just say their arrows strike with unerring accuracy.
One of the hunters in the cold wastes of North Dakota and Montana is Hugh Glass played by Leonard DiCaprio
Among the many fighting scenes, none betters the attack by a grizzly bear where the protagonist suffers life-threatening injuries and is left for dead. The wonders of modern-day film-making had me praying for the mauling to end, please, now.
Hark back to the title – a revenant is someone who supposedly rises from the dead. However, surviving the attacks by men and bear are just the first of the challenges Glass faces.
Left on his own, he is then tracked remorselessly for 320 kilometres by the Native Americans.
Filmed in remote, freezing snow and icy rivers, the epic is loosely based on the true story of Glass who had some sort of relationship with the Pawnee tribe.
DiCaprio’s character would have had to endure many horrors, like eating a fish raw, as well as hypothermia, and the actor must be a cinch for his long-awaited first Oscar.
The same applies to Tom Hardy, the English actor who superbly portrayed the Kray twins in Legend.
In a role about as far from Ronnie and Reggie Kray as you can get, Hardy plays Glass’ enemy, the appalling John Fitzgerald, whose gravelly southern drawl demands attentive hearing.
Hardy’s performance might also merit an Oscar nomination.
As must Mexican producerdirector Alejandro Inarritu and his cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, because The Revenant is an epic work of art. Volence aside, the close-up landscape scenes using natural light, are stunning.

The only character poorly cast was the trappers’ captain, played without much cred by Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson, son of esteemed actor Brendan Gleeson.
Overall though, The Revenant is a compellingly harrowing mustwatch.
