Inaugural cycle race ready to tour Manawatu roads
A multi-surface cycle event comes to Manawatu this Sunday. The inaugural 2016 Gravel & Tar Cycle Gran Fondo takes place around Manawatu over sealed and unsealed roads.
Hosted by Bike Manawatu, the 80km multi-surface cycle race has been organised to attract many of New Zealand’s top professional riders.
They are still in the lower North Island following the Elite Road Cycling National Championships in Napier last weekend, and who will be competing in the NZ Cycle Classic in Wairarapa starting on January 20.
Boasting one of the highest prize purses in NZ cycling, G&T Classic race director Steve Stannard says it will attract aggressive racing and team tactics amongst the professionals.
‘‘It will also provide an opportunity for a number of up-andcoming elite road riders living here in Manawatu to compete against some of the world’s best.’’
Manawatu Junior World Championship representatives Robert Stannard and Campbell Stewart from Team Skoda Racing, are expected to take part.
In two parts, the 80km fun ride leaves The Square at 9am, and the Elite Classic 10am.
Riders are expected to finish at Memorial Park in Main St from 12.30pm. Online registrations close Friday 15 at 5pm, late entries are accepted at AvantiPlus on Ferguson St, on Saturday 16 between 1pm and 6pm.
