Reserve upgrade on track

The Tribune (NZ) - - ENVIRONMENT -

Popular Totara Reserve is getting a makeover.

Already completed are upgrades to the Fern Walk and new signage, while further improvements are planned for other tracks, along with a new playground.

The new section of the Fern Walk is part of a 700 metre development project to link all the reserve’s tracks together, and make it easier and safer for walkers to navigate. It calls for the construction of two foot- bridges, and better track drainage. Bill Martyn from Horizons Regional Council says one of the most anticipated projects is the foot-bridge to keep walkers off the road.

‘‘Horizons is keen to get this bridge installed for safety reasons. There are still a few obstacles, but we’re hoping to work with local organisations to get the bridge installed early this year.’’

The proposed playground will occupy a section of the Camp Kereru campsite featuring a balance disc, basket swing, log bridges, log mound and a balance rope. It has been designed to cater for all ages and will be naturally sourced where possible.

Horizons is funding some of the project, however a further $40,000 is required to see it completed.
