Sounds of summer

It’s the Sounds of Summer (SOS) in the Esplanade one last time. The alfresco series finale opens this Sunday afternoon with Dirty Hairy, who featured last week alongside Stanley Pedigree. Stomach coordinator Matt Davies, by way of Croatia, plays with jazz, hip hop, soul and funk flavours, and has just announced up coming gigs at The Fish.

Aaron ‘Grizzly’ Smith, vocalist and guitarist with The Blue Grizzly Band then brings his solo versions of the group’s heavy blues rock and modern blues funk to the stage.

That’s followed by a burst from the region’s perennially favourite plunkers, Ukephoria. The popular six-piece uke ensemble has gigged recently at the ‘‘new’’ Bent Horseshoe, aka The Hokowhitu Bowling Club, supported September’s ukelele festival, and are best known for promoting a plunking good time.

‘Fresh outta Swampton’, twopiece live electronic band HUFF gets to finish off the 2016 sessions. Veterans of Melbourne’s Square-Sounds and a 2014 tour to Japan, Hayden Sinclair and Craig Black have been together since 2011, making use of synths, drum machines, vocals, samples and reverb.

SOS isn’t all over just yet . Each day next week, it continues with lunchtime concerts in The Square, Between midday and 1.30pm from Monday 15 until Friday 19, the daily ‘music to munch your lunch to’ gig profiles two local musical acts. Among them are performers from the Esplanade, offering an opportunity to appreciate their talent all over again. Among the musicians reprising their performances are Libby Offord, the Bing Turkby Ensemble and G_Phunk.

Details are in What’s On and at accessman
