Valentine’s Day with Will Martin
International singing star Will Martin, has a bit of soft spot for Manawatu. Here is where his solo career was nurtured, encouraged and as a result, bloomed.
With guest Rebecca Nelson, Will is performing his only New Zealand concert this summer at the Feilding Civic Centre on Valentine’s Day, February 14.
‘‘Manawatu was incredibly supportive during my early career and I’m excited to return to the region once again,’’ the Los Angeles based singer says.
The last 12 months have seen him perform in Europe where he headlined the Basel Tattoo – an event second only to Edinburgh’s Military Tattoo, and performed a solo concert in London’s West End.
Particularly popular in the UK, Will’s 2007 debut album A New World went to #1, making him the youngest artist in history to top the UK classical charts. It had taken just six weeks for the album to attain double platinum status in New Zealand.
He’s also become national anthem singer of choice for many top sport and government organisations including the NZRU. He’s performed God Defend New Zealand seven times at All Black tests and, on all of those occasions, New Zealand has won.
Producer of the February 14 concert in Feilding, Pat Snoxell, says Will is the ideal Valentine’s Day artist.
‘‘Will has a smooth, romantic voice that will appeal to everyone. His repertoire, and the way he personally connects with his audience will make this concert very special.’’
Rebecca will be remembered for her emotional rendition of the national anthem with the New Zealand Navy Band at Gallipoli last year. Following the Valentine’s Day concert, the young indemand singer heads to Wellington to perform at the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo.
The pair have been close friends since Rebecca guested on Will’s 2011 South Island tour, and she is particularly excited about Feilding ‘‘as it’s my first visit to this beautiful town.’’
‘‘I’m really looking forward to teaming up with Will for several concerts in 2016,’’ she says.
Their song selection features a collection of classical, musical theatre and popular favourites that is certain to please.
Tickets (adults $35, children $20, 10 + $30) for the 4pm Valentine’s Day concert, are available from the Feilding Information Centre, Regent On Broadway and TicketDirect.
Roses are rare, my love. Will Martin makes Feilding his Valentine this Sunday in a special matinee concert.
