HOKOWHITU A Hidden Treasure
A Fine Wine Tops Off Any Evening’s Entertainment
Our late summer weather is perfect for entertaining, and to make catching up with friends and family even more entertaining there’s nothing quite like a bottle or two of fine wine and, with the help of the team at The Village Wine Trader in Hokowhitu Village, you’ll be able to select from the very best. At this time of year, al fresco dining and entertainment is extremely popular and The Village Wine Trader has great selection of superbly refreshing white wines. Owner Duncan Win recommends a sauvignon blanc or riesling with seafood and a chardonnay with your mains. However, for a barbecue it’s often better to choose a wine with higher acid content to help cut through the slightly charred oily flavours of barbecue cooking, and adds that the European reds are an excellent choice as they are less fruity than the New Zealand and Australian reds. Champagne and bubbles are always a good choice during the warmer weather, especially when there’s some celebrating to do. These can be served at any time of the day, starting with a picnic lunch right through to the evening’s dessert. The Village Wine Trader has an excellent selection of French Champagnes as well as an extensive range of bubbles from New Zealand and further afield, including the extremely popular Prosecco, which is the number one sparkling wine from Italy. Champagne prices range from $39.90 up to around $400, while an excellent bubbles, including Prosecco, can cost less than $20. The Village Wine Trader has been a focal point in the Hokowhitu Village for more than 23 years “People come to us because they know we are wine specialists and we work really hard at ensuring we have a great selection of excellent, affordable wines. We currently have some superb French, Italian, Spanish and Australian wines at under $20. We also have a range of top New Zealand wines, and ones to look out for are the Hawkes Bay Syrah’s and the Marlborough Pinot Noir’s, which have really come of age recently,” says Duncan. If you are entertaining for an extra special occasion, The Village Wine Trader also has a fantastic selection of slightly more expensive wines and, with his experience, Duncan will help you select the perfect wine to complement your evening. The Village Wine Trader also caters for the whiskey connoisseur with a choice of top-class malts. For the beer lovers, they have an interesting range of craft beers from New Zealand, Australia and Britain, which includes some low alcohol brews and Duncan adds that they also have a selection of low alcohol wine in stock. After over 23 years supplying top class wines to Manawatu, Duncan and his staff have an enviable knowledge of wine varieties and flavours.
