‘‘Pied pipers’’ seek concert followers
The pipes are calling as France-based organist Christopher Hainsworth returns to Palmerston North. On his current tour, the organist of Beziers Cathedral is bringing virtuoso clarinettist Andrei Freidine for ‘‘Two Pied Pipers – An Entertainment’’ at St Andrews in the City this Saturday February 27.
Roy Tanksersley of the Manawatu Organ Group says as its title suggests, the twilight concert at 6pm will involve some audience participation.
‘‘Particularly for young instrumental players and music enthusiasts. Andrei will interact with the audience and invite them to join a Piped Piper procession.’’
While the combination of clarinet and organ is unusual, Roy says it is surprisingly successful.
‘‘Audiences are alternately moved by the expressive beauty of Andrei’s playing, staggered by his breathtaking virtuosity and excited by the duo’s lively rendition of popular music.’’
The pair will be performing a varied programme of classical, traditional, jazz and klezmer music, including Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, Rossini’s virtuoso Variations, as well as a couple of marches, the foot-tapping jazz classics of Gershwin and Goodman, and stunning interpretations of Klezmer music with its extraordinary expression of tragic and joyous emotions.
‘‘It’s music that weeps profusely but also dances deliriously.’’
A regular tourist to New Zealand, Christopher is known for his enjoyable, informative and thought-provoking performances. Keen on popular music and on accompanying silent movies, he was also harpsichord soloist in Bach’s Fifth Brandenburg Concerto with the Montpellier National Orchestra last year, and organ soloist in Handel’s Bb Concerto with the Liege Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra.
Andrei teaches clarinet and computer music studies at the Beziers Conservatoire, records a variety of artists in his studio, and works on acoustic projects for Eurocontrole who are responsible for European airspace management. He has also been a guest on Frederic Lodeon’s music programme on France Inter Radio and France 3 TV has broadcast two programmes on his life and activities.
Following the hour long concert there will be refreshments on the lawn. Admission is by programme available at the door on the night. The Manawatu Organ Group is grateful for assistance provided through the Creative Communities Scheme of Palmerston North.
