Folk duo The Bollands hit the city
Globetrotting Kiwi folk duo, The Bollands, return to New Zealand for a nationwide tour with support from USA band Mero. They’ll perform at The Dark Room in Palmerston North at 8pm, March 12.
The husband and wife act, who’ve been living out of suitcases and travelling the world since 2012, have played in venues and festivals throughout the world but have yet to do a national tour of New Zealand.
‘‘We’ve been so busy over the past few years that the opportunity to play back home just didn’t happen,’’ says The Bollands’ pianist and drummer Joyce. ‘‘While we were in Portland, Oregon in the USA, we got talking to the guys from the band Mero about how lovely New Zealand is and we decided to plan and do a tour together in summer 2016.’’
The Bollands play foot-stomping folk music, and they’ve gained a reputation for their earthy energetic live shows and honest melodic ballads. They have recently been on the road in China and the USA with award-winning singer songwriter, Vienna Teng.
‘‘Last year we played in about 30 cities in China,’’ says Joyce. ‘‘At first we struggled being on the road all the time. It can be a real culture shock, but we’ve gotten used to it and it’s an amazing privilege to have people open their lives up to us and let us sing to them.’’
The Bollands will be sharing the night with USA dream pop band Mero.
‘‘I think it will be a pretty magical night,’’ says Joyce. ‘‘Mero have such a distinct and beautiful sound, I’m really excited.’’
