Madison’s locks face the chop
Madison Doyle is blessed with a luxuriant flaming coppercoloured head of hair.
It’s a russet crown the nineyear old year-5 pupil at Ashhurst School is, however, quite prepared to give up.
Madison plans to have her hair sheared during the Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life 24-hour affirmation of the human spirit on Sunday March 13.
For the last six years, Madison’s mum, Jo Dunn has been a member of Relay team Mumgu’s Mumbles Milers, a group that fundraises in the memory of Vicky Arnott who died from the disease in July 2009.
‘‘Vicky, known as Mumgu to her grandchildren, was a staunch campaigner for the Manawatu Cancer Society, selling thousands of bears and co-ordinating the National Bank contribution to Daffodil Day for over 15 years,’’ Jo explains.
The National Bank has since been subsumed into ANZ, which is now the principal sponsor for Daffodil Day.
‘‘We are all walking in the memory of someone who fought hard for quite a while before she got tired. Mumgu’s Mumbles Milers is made up entirely of family and friends who wish to celebrate Vicky’s life and continue supporting the Cancer Society as she would have wished.
‘‘Since we began relaying, we have lost many more lovely people to this revolting disease, so we are relaying for them as well.’’
Madison has attended the Relay for Life event with her mum for several years, but this year she does so as a fully-fledged member of the team. Pledging a head-shave, she has, since the beginning of February, raised over $300, but has set herself the target of reaching $1000.
While Jo advised her on what to aim for, Madison is not entirely sure how she came up with the head-shave idea,
‘‘I don’t know really. I just want to fundraise for my team and help people with cancer.’’
Keen to give it a go last year,
‘‘I just want to fundraise for my team and help people with cancer.’’ Madison Doyle
family circumstances put things on hold, but the main thing is that Madison, like her mum, wants to make a difference.
Along with the Mumgus Mumbles Milers, Madison has created a Relay for Life donation page rflmanawatu2016.everydayhero.com/nz/madison-is-shaving and thanks you very much in advance. Her mainstage haircut is scheduled for around 10am, Sunday March 13.
Madison Doyle has a burning desire to make a contribution to Relay for Life by chopping her flaming locks.
