Just Zilch cuts the ribbon

The Tribune (NZ) - - NEWS -

A good example of the community helping itself.

That’s how mayor Grant Smith feels about the city’s free food store, Just Zilch.

Just Zilch has been up and running in its new venue opposite Boys’ High on Featherston St since just before Christmas.

When the lease at the old Gull petrol station HQ on Fitzherbert Ave ran out it, Just Zilch moved to a council-owned building, and then raised around $100,000 to get it fitted out. Many businesses also came on board to help, with Isles Construction managing the project.

Grant says the city was happy to help out with an empty councilowned building when they discovered Just Zilch needed a new premises.

The official opening of the new refitted store took place on Saturday.

Just Zilch director Rebecca Culver says she was ‘‘blown away’’ by the support they received to get the new store ready to open, with donations coming in from throughout the country.

‘‘We just never imagined people outside of Palmerston North donating to something like this.’’

More than 30 businesses donate food on a regular basis.
