Quality and value for more than 55 years
Barry Gillespie and wife Elizabeth have owned and operated Gillespies Value House in Terrace End for more than 55 years and throughout this time they have outfitted a huge number of loyal customers, from near and far, with their quality and affordable clothing.
Barry recalls that when they first purchased the business in 1961, the trains were still running up Main Street.
‘‘In those days we would have to shut the doors to keep the noise and dust out as they rattled past. Since the rail has gone we are fortunate to have a good area of free parking out the front of the shop.’’
When Barry and Elizabeth first took over the business they stocked a large range of material as many people would make their own clothes, especially for their children. While they still have a large range of haberdashery and have kept a good supply of knitting wool, needles and patterns, much of their time has been sourcing and supplying a complete range of clothing to their customers; from nightwear and undergarments to skirts, blouses and shirts; trousers and jackets, as well as sports wear and school uniforms.’’
Gillespies carries a full range uniforms, including sportswear for, Palmerston North Girls’ High School, Intermediate Normal, St Peters and St James.
Barry says they make sure they always have stock in store to cater for children coming to the schools at any time during the year. Many parents make use of Gillespies lay-by to help pay for their children’s uniforms and now that summer uniforms have been bought and paid for, it’s a good time to put a deposit down on the winter uniform.
‘‘I always enjoy seeing children come in with their parents who I can remember when they came in as children.’’
The commercial area of Terrace End has come a long way since Barry and Elizabeth started Gillespies Value House and Barry says that it’s really good to see the new buildings going up and the number of different businesses that are now operating in the area. This all holds good for the future as Barry is planning on taking a reduced role in the business.
‘‘There are things we want to do in our retirement and if the right person comes along, who is committed to keeping the business going along the same lines, than we’ll probably sell. If not, then we’ll employ a manager who can take over my role. So either way, we are going to be here for a good time yet, giving our customers the same friendly service along with good quality clothing.’’
Right now, Gillespies is having a store-wide sale of up to 50 per cent off, including their entire haberdashery range. So for quality and affordable clothing as well as great bargains in men’s and women’s clothing, park free right outside and enjoy the personal attention and experience Gillespies friendly staff has to offer.
