Message from the Mayor

Kia Ora

We are currently consulting on our Annual Plan for 2016/17. This is year 2 of our 10 Year Plan and, although there are no major changes to the 10 Year Plan, the Council is proposing some small additions to keep a good balance between what people expect us to do and what it costs.

Our Consultation Document was delivered to all households last week. It is brief but important, because it outlines our proposals for the 2016/17 year. See page three for further information. Earlier this year I attended the opening of the Massey Maori Science Academy. The programme will work with five Manawatū secondary schools to nurture Maori students with a love of science. Guests at the opening included speakers from NASA. The Pūhoro programme is funded by Massey University and Te Puni Kōkiri with support from the Palmerston North City Council, Te Tumu Paeroa and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. I was thrilled to hear that Palmerston North City Council together with the Manawatū District Council have secured the Hilux New Zealand Rural Games for the next two years. The free two-day event will be held over the weekend of 11–12 March 2017 and will take place in The Square. The games will kick off the New Zealand Agri Investment Week and will add to the vibrancy of the City. It’s great to see the City swell with so many new students who choose to study in Palmerston North. I welcome you to our City and encourage you to partake of everything we have to offer during your time here.
