Summer’s popular Super 7s evening runs are already a distant memory. But next week there’s a chance to revisit them, and contribute to a worthy cause at the same time.
When Korinne Brown’s army engineer partner started posting images of the devastation caused by Cyclone Winston in Fiji, the FMG insurance analyst and keen runner decided something should be done.
‘‘My partner, Chris Donovan is part of the deployment sent to Fiji on February 24. I’ve seen all the pictures on Facebook, so I thought about organising something for the people of Fiji.’’
The couple had participated in a charity run last year in Taupo for the girls in Kenya, and Korinne decided a similar event could be organised here.
The outcome is an all-ages, timed charity fun run and walk next Tuesday 29 around Ongley Park over three distances 1.9km, 3.8km and 5.7km. Walkers are welcome and so is dress-up.
‘‘I love dressing up, and will jump at any opportunity to do it. There’ll be kids there, so I thought some people might like that option.’’
So, break out the tutus, tiaras, capes, onesies, wedding gowns, quirky characters, and anything else lurking in the costume box.
‘‘I plan on getting pretty dressed up. There is a prize for the best dressed, and some spot prizes as well.’’
A photographer will capture those wacky costumed moments, and there’s a lolly scramble for the kids. Entry is the same as the Super 7s, $3, but there will be donation boxes if participants want to give further.
Korinne hopes a great turnout will make a difference for the people of Fiji, as well as acknowl- edge and support what Kiwi army sappers are doing there.
Registration at the cricket centre on Park Rd is from 5.30pm with the run at 6.15pm, but no dogs please. See facebook.com/ events/1740640782889010/ or Face book:- Charity Fun Run/walk – raise money for Fiji.
Korinne, is pictured on the page holding a ‘‘Get Ellen DeGeneres to help Fiji’’ sign. A fan of Ellen, she’s hoping the post may attract the host’s attention.
‘‘Random people get through to her – so, you never know.’’

In a cossie representing the colours of the Fijian flag blue, red, white and yellow, Korinne Brown is encouraging as many people as possible to join in a charity run for Fiji next Tuesday evening.
