The Tribune (NZ) - - WELCOME - – Richard

We’ve had a wonderful run with the summery conditions, but autumn is upon us.

Emerging from our Easter holiday burrows, hopefully not too over-dosed on chocolate, we learn that seasonal change has not extended to the flag. The old tried and true, white red and blue ensign remains intact.

Interesting was how many people were engaged enough in the debate to cast a vote, and how relatively close the preliminary result was.

Still, more than 1 million registered voters - that’s more than the numbers who voted for the ‘‘fishbone’’ design, chose not to be involved.

Next time, and there will be a next time – don’t expect this to be the end of the flag debate, perhaps we could get the process right, and at least include designers on the panel, while having a better and more open selection process.

Maybe then we will get the flag we really want.
