Shadows guitar man a Bartlett fan
Talk about the ultimate accolade. New Zealand guitarist Gray Bartlett, has received unqualified praise from on high.
Gray’s new album, Private Conversations, which has reached No 4 in the New Zealand charts, has been applauded by none other than Hank Marvin of The Shadows.
The outstanding review is perfect timing as Gray is currently touring New Zealand, and plays the Regent On Broadway this Saturday, April 23.
According to the influential and pioneering Shadows guitarist, Gray’s ‘‘choice of music is diverse, engaging, and he interprets the compositions with clarity and sensitivity, qualities that many guitarists lack.’’ Oh, but there’s more. ‘‘Gray’s command of different guitar techniques is also demonstrated as he switches easily from beautifully performed finger style acoustic, to slide guitar, to country rock and even to heavy blues rock.’’
If Hank is a music legend, so is Gray. Awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s honours, Gray is still the biggestselling Kiwi guitarist by far. He’s performed alongside international acts such as Tom Jones, Kenny Rogers, and Dame Vera Lynn, and let’s not forget his long association with fellow country artists Jodi Vaughan and Brendan Dugan.
As a promoter, he has toured Pavarotti, Michael Jackson, Elton John, and Boney M as well as Hank himself.
Featuring songs from his new album on Saturday night, Gray won’t be able to resist playing old audience faves, undoubtedly including his signature songs La Playa along with his own version of the Shad’s 1960 number-1 hit, Apache.
Onstage with Gray will be the vibrant and versatile Chet O’Connell.
