Mum’s Day Run
Brekky in bed won’t be a feature of this Sunday morning for many Manawatu mums. Instead, they’ll be pounding it out along the bridle path.
The Jennian Homes Mother’s Day Fun Run/Walk starts from Manawaroa Park at 9am and follows a 5-kilometre route. Last year 350 took part in Palmerston North, joining 7000 participating nationally.
Held in conjunction with the Heart Foundation’s nationwide ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign, the event aims to raise awareness of heart disease in a campaign to improve the heart health of New Zealand females.
Stats from the Heart Foundation reveal that more than 50 women each week in this country succumb to heart disease, with the disease the single biggest killer of women.
‘‘Heart disease is often thought to be a male problem, but it’s the number-one killer of women both in New Zealand and globally,’’ says the Heart Foundation’s medical director, Gerry Devlin. ‘‘In fact, Kiwi women are four times more likely to die of heart disease than breast cancer.’’
Women are particularly vulnerable during menopause as blood pressure and cholesterol levels can increase while fat distribution can change. Managing weight, cholesterol, blood pressure and not smoking all help reduce the risk.
Jennian Homes will be giving $20,000 to the national ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign.
‘‘Community wellness and the health of all New Zealanders is important to us and we are proud to support the Heart Foundation’s ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign and the Jennian Homes Mother’s Day Fun Run/Walk,’’ says Jennian Homes Manawatu’s Tarsha Isles.
‘‘It is a great event and a fun way to spend Mother’s Day, and we encourage as many women as possible in Palmerston North to show support for women’s heart health.’’
Jennian Homes Manawatu franchise owner Carmen Wineera says they are hoping as many as 500 people could turn out for the event.
On-line entrants also got to nominate a local primary school to win $2500 of Rebel Sport vouchers to promote exercise and healthy hearts to to pupils.
Online registrations closed yesterday.
