Needy benefit as volunteer harvesters hit the jackpot

The Tribune (NZ) - - NEWS -

It’s harvest time, and Community Fruit Harvest Manawatu (CFH) is making the most of the opportunities.

Invitations to harvest surplus pumpkins, squash, and now apples and potatoes have resulted in what CFH coordinator Madz BatachEl calls an ‘‘amazing turnout’’.

A pumpkin harvest on Saturday, saw plenty of volunteers harvest a large amount of produce which was distributed to Manawatu, Rangitikei and Whanganui community groups.

An apple and potato harvest from a site just outside Palmerston North set down for today is expected to draw harvesters in similar numbers.

Madz says CFH intends to donate the bulk of the produce to those in need through its community networks, while volunteer fruit pickers are welcome to take home what they can uee.

‘‘If your community group would like to receive some of this surplus produce to distribute, or if you would like to volunteer to pick fruit; register your fruit tree to be picked or receive some fruit for your charitable organisation, or help in any way, contact CFH at pickfruit@slingshot.co.nz .’’
