Foot care an essential factor in overall health

The Tribune (NZ) - - YOUR BODY -

We may not see very much of our distant appendages but when there’s an ache or discomfort our feet certainly come to the fore.

The stubbed toe, athlete’s itch or an ingrown toenail can have a huge effect on our general well-being.

Podiatrist Lorraine McRae (van Dam) says: ‘‘Often people don’t realise that many painful foot problems can easily be resolved with a visit to a podiatrist. Ignoring the problem can lead to more severe consequences for your foot and your overall health.’’

Lorraine has been in private practice for 42 years, owning and operating McRae Podiatry at 184 Grey St, as well as holding a weekly clinic in Feilding, and she has recently welcomed fellow podiatrist Joanne Turner to her team.

Joanne is a senior podiatrist with 16 years’ experience, having graduated from Southampton University with a B.Sci (Hons) Pod. She will be taking over Wednesday clinics at Feilding as well as working in the Grey Street Clinic.

Lorraine says that as qualified podiatrists both Joanne and herself are experienced practitioners in all problems associated with feet and lower limbs.

‘‘For people who have problems such as ingrown toenails or fungal infections, skin calluses, corns, cracked dry heels or verrucas, or biomechanical issues such as over pronation or supination of the foot while walking or running, heel or arch pain, bunions or Achilles tendonitis and generalised leg, hip and back pain, we are qualified to diagnose and treat these conditions and if we can’t solve the problem we will refer them to their GP or a specialist.’’

For biomechanical issues Lorraine says they will assess the patient’s gait and analyse their walking style to see what the best solution to their problem is. This may include shoe advice, exercises or orthotics to go inside their shoes. Joanne says they work as part of a team with other professionals such as physiotherapists and occupational therapists to get the very best outcome for each of their patients. For people in a high risk category or who find it physically demanding to attend to their own toenails, McRae Podiatry offers a budget price toenail cutting service, where WINZ subsidies may be available.
