Bob’s birthday bash

Hob nob with Bob Dylan die-hard fans at a tribute concert.

Bob Dylan is 75 on May 24. Happy birthday St Bob!

So many musical heroes have recently moved from this realm to join the choir invisible, but Bob keeps a-chooglin’ along.

So here’s an invitation to celebrate the legendary singer/ songwriter while he is still with us.

Bullfrog Rata and Shayn Wills, two of New Zealand’s finest acoustic blues/folk players are teaming up for a night of Dylan songs, both popular and obscure.

Fans of the man for over 20 years, Shayn and Bullfrog have plenty of Dylan numbers in their extensive repertoires – numbers that date from Dylan’s self-titled debut in 1962 and perhaps even extend to his latest 2016 release Fallen Angels.

‘‘One of the things I like about Bob Dylan’s material is that he covers a large range of genres, everything from folk and gospel to blues, rock and country,’’ Bullfrog says. ‘‘It makes for an interesting night, not only lyrically but musically.’’

‘‘I think the song that got me was Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright and from there I spent the next couple of years completely hooked and just learning Dylan tunes,’’ Shayn says.

‘‘I’ve never really thought of myself as a Bob Dylan freak, but I guess when you know over 40 of his songs it could be considered slightly freakish.’’

This Saturday May 21, along with a display of Dylan vinyl, books and memorabilia, the pair play the Hokowhitu Bowling Club at 7.30pm. Dylan T-shirts are de rigueur, with $20 bookings on 06 329 8808 or steve@benthorse
