Manawatu Concert Band
Classic rock, classic big band, classic classical and classic big screen themes feature on Saturday in a wide-ranging musical programme. From movie music from the movie How to Train Your Dragon to the composer Rossini; from the popular light orchestral of Ron Goodwin and the big band jazz of Glenn Miller, to the anthemic pop/rock of Queen, the award-winning Manawatu Concert Band’s Classics! concert promises an evening of family-oriented musical fun.
Saturday’s Spiers Centre performance sees the return of Peter Ellery to the conductor’s podium. Musical director of the famous Feilding Brass Band for 30-odd years, Peter took a break from the baton to enjoy playing his trombone again. However, after playing as a member of the Manawatu Concert Band for a couple of years, he has stepped back up front to become its musical director, and now shares conducting duties with Stephen Wildbore
‘‘This ensemble has been a fixture of the regional music scene for over 20 years, and is quite a different beast to a brass band,’’ Peter says. ‘‘It combines woodwind and brass which gives it a wide range of instrumental ‘voices’ and a wide repertoire.’’
It’s an ambitious musical programme. Setting challenges for the band, the conductor says lifts performance while also making it interesting for the band’s members.
‘‘They have responded really well, winning a Gold and Runner-Up Most Entertaining Band award at the 2015 Feilding Festival of Bands.’’
Several of the pieces on Saturday will feature solos that provide band members with a chance to show their virtuosity, while the audience will get to appreciate the talents of a top local musical ensemble.
Joining in with a short complementary programme is Uke Box, Ashhurst’s ukulele orchestra.
Tickets for the 7.30pm concert at the Spiers Centre are available from band members or cash sales only at the door. Adults are $10, children and unwaged $5, and a family pass for two adults and three children, is $25.
Conductor Peter Ellery is back on the podium, this time in charge of the Manawatu Concert Band which performs this Saturday night in the Spiers Centre.
