Getting down to business with Grease
Leather jackets, bobby sox, combed quiffs; first loves, fast cars and timeless music. Rydell High is back on stage at Freyberg High for the production of perennial favourite, Grease.
When Sandy met Danny during summer break, there were sparks. Back at school, hey things were way more cool. The classic coming of age tale with bad-boy Danny Zuko, sweet Sandy Dumbrowski, Rizzo, Kenickie, Doody, the geeky Eugene and the rest of the Rydell High gang opens in the Freyberg High hall next Tuesday, May 31.
Expect a high energy production directed by school drama head, Tamzin Darragh, and incorporating choreography from year 13 dance students Indiya Malthus-Henman and Tobyn Gregory under the supervision of teacher Leanne Melbye. There’s a troupe of cheerleaders and an eight-piece band under the direction of Dave Edmonds with musical direction by Kirsten Clark.
Tamzin, who has overseen previous school productions Fame, Footloose, Bugsy and Annie says the cast of 63 features all the members of the school’s drama academy with George Naylor as Danny, Josie Greeston as Sandy, Indiya as Rizzo and Jeremy Hunt as Kenickie.
Incorporating a traditional staff item, the show has also made use of part of the set from Freyberg’s original production of the rock ‘n roll show.
Grease runs from May 31 – June 4 at 7.30pm in the school hall. Adults are $15, students $10 with bookings from the school office 358 4971 and freyberg.ac.nz
