‘De­bate wot lure’s de fish’ – ap­par­ently.

The Youth Ac­tion Group Manawatu (YAGM) is hop­ing de­bate will lure post-Bud­get dis­cus­sion about en­vi­ron­men­tal is­sues and their pos­si­ble so­lu­tions. Apart from be­ing Queen’s Birth­day, Monday is also World En­vi­ron­ment Day and YAGM has or­gan­ised an af­ter­noon youth de­bate event for Youth Space.

YAGM’s Han­nah Hig­gin­son says it’ll be a fun, free and re­laxed af­ter­noon of dis­cus­sion and ‘speed de­bat­ing’ from 3pm – 6pm, open to any­one aged 12-20, and for ex­pe­ri­enced and non-ex­pe­ri­enced de­baters.

‘‘Even if they’ve never done de­bat­ing be­fore we are en­cour­ag­ing young peo­ple to come along and learn how. There’ll be a crash course in de­bat­ing to make it ac­ces­si­ble for ev­ery­one.’’

Among the pos­si­bil­i­ties are top­ics such as ‘‘Is ve­g­an­ism a way to save the planet?’’, and ‘‘Is ev­ery­body equally re­spon­si­ble for the de­struc­tion of the en­vi­ron­ment?’’

There’ll be snacks and spot prizes along with open dis­cus­sions and ‘speed de­bates’.
