Debating the issues
‘Debate wot lure’s de fish’ – apparently.
The Youth Action Group Manawatu (YAGM) is hoping debate will lure post-Budget discussion about environmental issues and their possible solutions. Apart from being Queen’s Birthday, Monday is also World Environment Day and YAGM has organised an afternoon youth debate event for Youth Space.
YAGM’s Hannah Higginson says it’ll be a fun, free and relaxed afternoon of discussion and ‘speed debating’ from 3pm – 6pm, open to anyone aged 12-20, and for experienced and non-experienced debaters.
‘‘Even if they’ve never done debating before we are encouraging young people to come along and learn how. There’ll be a crash course in debating to make it accessible for everyone.’’
Among the possibilities are topics such as ‘‘Is veganism a way to save the planet?’’, and ‘‘Is everybody equally responsible for the destruction of the environment?’’
There’ll be snacks and spot prizes along with open discussions and ‘speed debates’.
