Jackson tribute returns
Michael Jackson! Michael may be gone, but his legacy continues, safe in the hands of The Michael Jackson HIStory Show tribute.
It’s been two years since the Showtime Australia production performed in the Regent on Broadway, and in that time it has undergone a revamp.
That includes a new lead in South African singer and dancer Dantanio.
Since 2009, the role had been performed by veteran MJ impersonator Kenny Wizz who retired, aged 50, in 2014. Show director Johnny Van Grinsven was unsure how the change would go down with fans.
‘Wizz was part of this show for almost five years so it was a big transition, but our fans have been so supportive, and the reviews on Dantanio have been great,’’ Johnny says.
Not only a Michael Jackson fan from childhood, Dantanio who has a gospel-influenced upbringing, is a skilled dancer, composer and producer in his own right with two solo albums.
At 16, he was ejected from a Michael Jackson amateur dance competition because the judges were convinced he was a professional performer.
The revamped tribute stays true to its original live band concert format, showcasing MJ’s greatest hits with additional songs, updated costumes and choreography, and new production elements.
Bookings are through TicketDirect for the show on Queen’s Birthday Monday, June 6.
