Fantasy theme for Unity Singers concert
It’s a free sing-out at the fantasy factory! Wondering what happened to the traditional Unity Singers Mother’s Day concert? Well, it moved.
The Unity Singers under the musical direction of Helen O’Connor, normally present their major production on Mother’s Day. This year, the Singers have themed their annual free concert around fantasy and classic Disney for the Regent on Broadway this Sunday, June 12 at 1.30pm.
The matinee opens with three popular numbers that the 34-strong chorus love singing – The Carpenters’ On Top of the World, Somewhere Over the Rainbow from TheWizard Of Oz and Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, with the first half ending in tribute to one of the greatest Disney movies of all time, Mary Poppins.
Mary Poppins is now a popular stage musical and the costumed Unity Singers will show why it’s so enduring with numbers including Spoonful of Sugar, Feed the Birds, Let’s Go Fly a Kite, Supercalifragilistic and Chim Chim Cher-ee. Between the opening and the
Mary Poppins montage, special guests include the 16 member Zero Gravity cheerleading squad, roller skaters, dancers, and ukuleles.
The second half is devoted to catchy songs from classic Disney movies, among them Pinocchio,
The Jungle Book, Beauty and the
Beast and The Lion King, with a solo dancer from the Maureen Ax Dance School and African drummers enhancing the presentations.
Children from Tiritea School will also be presenting songs from their show, Under The Sea.
