Intersection safety under the spotlight

The Tribune (NZ) - - NEWS - RICHARD MAYS

A roundabout where Roberts Line meets Napier Rd will be an option discussed at a forthcoming public meeting about the intersection.

Palmerston North list MP Jono Naylor has called the meeting in Kelvin Grove on Monday June 27 in response to residents’ complaints about the busy state highway junction.

‘‘This intersection is becoming increasing problematic and is a significant safety concern to those who use it regularly,’’ Jono says.

He wants to get residents’ perspectives on the issue as well as work out community based solutions that could be presented to the New Zealand Transport Agency. He says having the intersection under NZTA control makes it difficult for the city council to act, and he hoped to add strength to any case put to the agency.

Responding to a submission from resident David Parham who is concerned about the safety of pedestrians crossing Napier Rd, the Palmerston North City Council resolved during its annual plan deliberations in May to investigate the feasibility of a roundabout with NZTA.

For the last two years a ‘‘temporary’’ 80kph speed restriction has been in place on the stretch of road. Jono says he understands the fears of road users attempting to turn right out of Roberts Line or cross the state highway to Te Matai Rd.

‘‘Getting across even when the speed restriction is 80kph, you feel like it’s something you have to psych yourself up for.’’

Adding to future traffic volumes is a recently approved subdivision between Roberts Line and James Line, with a new road, Freedom Drive, being created off Roberts Line about 120 metres up hill from the state highway. A further consider- ation is safe pedestrian and cyclist access across the highway to the Manawatu Riverside shared pathway.

Jono says a roundabout seems to be the most obvious solution, but he wants to hear other views.

The public meeting is planned for the Cornerstone Christian School staffroom on June 27 at 7.30pm. Inquiries can be made through Jono’s city office via jono naylor.office@parlia
